Migrate root directories and files

WP Engine Site Migration 1.5.0 introduces support for migrating root files.
For a WordPress administrator who is migrating a full site, files and directories in the root of the WordPress site can now be transferred in order to avoid having to manually migrate root files outside of the plugin.
The option to include root files in the migration means that the migrator can transfer documents, media, and other files to reduce the likelihood of critical errors, missing images, 404s, and broken links at the destination.
Due to the unpredictable nature of root files, they are not included by default in a full-site migration. When one or more root files are present on the source site, a badge that displays “Root Files Detected” will alert the user that root files are available to migrate. Choosing the option to “Customize the migration” allows individual files and directories to be selected.

Agreed, would be nice to have this added into the new migration plugin. We do have instances from time to time where we need to migrate additional items beyond just the WordPress install, which the old migration plugin allowed for.

Dan Lam: Hi Dan, thanks for adding to the conversation. Can you provide more detail about the types of files that you've had to migrate from the root directory in the past?

Kevin Hoffman: Sure thing, it's usually one of two things. First, it is sometimes a directory of files that the site owner like to keep/provide to their clients (PDF guides, etc.). Or second, the directory is for a separate application that they run for client forms (Machform is the name). So it's usually just a singular directory that we have to bring over.

This is already an option, though, if you use the migration plugin (at least, the old one).

Benjamin Tennant: Hi Benjamin, I'm the product manager of the WP Engine Site Migration plugin. You're correct, the old WP Engine Automated Migration plugin does support migrating root directories. That plugin will be deprecated in February 2024, so I made this post to gauge interest in adding the feature to the new WP Engine Site Migration plugin, which does not currently have this ability. If you've relied on this feature in the past or think you might need to migrate root files in the future, go ahead and upvote. Thanks!
